Canadian Astronaut Unveils Indigenous-Designed Patch for Upcoming Moon Mission
"Canadian Astronaut Reveals Indigenous-Designed Mission Patch at First Nations University"
Enthusiastic children gathered at the First Nations University of Canada in Regina on Thursday to witness astronaut Jeremy Hansen unveil the patch, created by an Indigenous artist, which he will proudly wear as the first Canadian slated to journey to the moon.
Hailing from London, Ont., Hansen is part of a four-member crew destined to orbit the moon during the Artemis II mission, slated for launch as early as September 2025.
During the event, Hansen shared how his interactions with Indigenous elders have deeply influenced his beliefs and perspectives.
"I think Indigenous knowledge has solidified things that I learned from my parents," remarked Hansen. "One of the things I appreciate is the shared understanding of the value of humanity, recognizing that we all possess equal worth."
The patch, meticulously crafted by Anishinaabe artist Henry Guimon of the Turtle Lodge—an Indigenous educational center in Sagkeeng First Nation, Manitoba—holds profound symbolism. It represents the seven sacred laws, embodying values such as respect, love, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth through symbols like the buffalo, eagle, bear, bigfoot, beaver, wolf, and turtle.
"These seven sacred laws serve as guiding principles for humanity, reminding us how to navigate our existence on this planet," Hansen explained. "As I represent Canadians on this mission, this patch serves as a poignant reminder of the values I aim to embody."
Dave Courchene, leader of the Turtle Lodge, joined the event, emphasizing the significance of Indigenous teachings in guiding human behavior and fostering a connection to the land.
"Each of these teachings, represented by animals, serves as a reminder of our connection to the Earth," said Courchene. "Observing animals and their behaviors teaches us valuable lessons about how to conduct ourselves."
Hansen has been on a nationwide tour to raise awareness about the Artemis II mission, which marks a historic return to crewed lunar exploration, following the last Apollo mission in 1972.
